Pride Month: Reflections from Our Associates
Firm
As we celebrate Pride Month, members of Baird’s Spectrum Associate Resource Group shared their reflections on Pride and what it means to the LGBTQ community.
"Pride Month is a time to reflect on and honor the people who have paved the way for equality for LGBTQ individuals. It is a time to celebrate the beauty that exists in all of us and it is a reminder of why it is so important for me to be my authentic self every day. For me, Pride Month is also a celebration of my wedding anniversary. Like many other Milwaukee couples, we were able to get married with the landmark ruling in Wisconsin on June 6th of 2014. For some LGBTQ people, Pride is the only time they feel free enough to be themselves." Beth Howell |

"Pride Month is a celebration of authenticity. It’s a time to remember those who have fought for our rights, to appreciate the freedoms and strength we have today, and to be courageous enough to continue that fight. I think we forget the amount of change we have achieved over the past 100 years: The Society for Human Rights in Chicago in 1924 and Stonewall in 1969, to Vermont becoming the first state to legalize same-sex marriage in 2000 and the end of DOMA in 2013. To commemorate that history this Pride Month, we in Baird Advisors are engaging in a review of historical moments or persons in LGBTQ+ history each day, starting in the early 1900s and ending with current day at Baird." "Pride Month is about individual empowerment and community togetherness. Pride Month is an opportunity to love one’s self unconditionally. The LGBTQ+ community is an intersection of humanity in all of its diversity, and I take pride in our community’s ability to bring diverse populations together. Through the support of one another and our allies, Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate our successes and remember the struggles of those who fought before us. This Pride Month, I am excited to work with friends, family, and colleagues to identify the community’s most urgent needs and to execute workable solutions for the benefit of LGBTQ+ people everywhere. Happy Pride to my Baird family!" Alex Marks |
